Midtown Sound
$775
How the award will be used?
Applicant Name: Anthony Eggert
Applicant Email: midtownsounddetroit@gmail.com
Project Name: Midtown Sound
Project Summary: Midtown Sound is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to bringing non-profit, community radio to the city of Detroit in the form of a low-power FM station. Recent legislation has opened up the airwaves in urban areas and we hope to take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity.
How will you use SOUP grant funding ($600-900) towards the realization of your project: With the money raised from SOUP, we would be able to pay for the filing fees associated with getting our 501(c)(3). This would allow us to start accepting larger donations and put us on the map as an actual, recognized non-profit organization.
Why does this project matter to the Detroit community: Music has always been essential to the city of Detroit, yet what's currently being played over our airwaves does not reflect the variety or quality of music that has come right from our backyard. Midtown Sound will not only expose Detroit's creations, but it will also create an outlet for the community to have a say in its local media.
What is the time frame for your project, and how could you share about its progress/completion at an upcoming SOUP: Our dream of becoming a low-power FM station is relatively far away. Licensing does not open up until next summer and if/when we get our license, it will still be about another year after that before we will be on the air. But, in the meantime, we hope to start an online radio station within the next year and we will be holding events in the coming months in order to get our name out there and start raising funds.
